THE MEEK SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH
Christianity has spent two thousand years waiting for a piece of real estate Jesus already handed to His people.
“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” — Matthew 5:5
Somewhere along the way, that line got turned into a future property deal.
Hold on. Be patient. Stay soft. Someday, maybe after the rapture or the millennium or the next reset of the cosmos, the humble will finally get the planet.
But Jesus wasn’t talking about dirt.
He was talking about access.
And to hear Him the way His first audience heard Him, we have to put the verse back inside the world they actually lived in — the temple.
1. THE TEMPLE WAS A MAP OF HEAVEN, EARTH, AND SEA
The tabernacle and temple were not just religious buildings.
They were a covenantal map.
The outer court represented the sea — the realm of separation, where the people approached God through sacrifice and mediation.
The Holy Place represented the earth — the realm of the Levitical priesthood. Those priests were the ones who lived inside that covenantal “earth,” with privileges of light, fellowship, and nearness that the ordinary Israelite did not have. In that picture, they occupied the position of the kings of the earth — kings and priests over the twelve tribes of Israel, which Scripture calls the nations of the earth. That language is not about people-groups scattered across the planet. In that covenant world, the nations of the earth were the tribes under the authority of that Levitical priesthood.
Beyond the second veil was the Holy of Holies — heaven — where the ark stood as the symbol of God’s throne and glory.
Now pay attention to what sat inside that Holy Place, because this is where Matthew 5:5 starts to open.
The Menorah — illumination, revelation, the light of God’s presence.
The Table of Showbread — fellowship, communion, participation in God’s provision.
The Altar of Incense — prayer, acceptance, the privilege of drawing near.
Those weren’t random pieces of furniture.
They were shadows of realities that would be revealed in Christ.
Everything in that covenantal earth spoke of relationship with God.
But there was a restriction.
Only the priests could enter.
Everyone else stayed outside the first veil.
2. THE EARTH WAS THE HOLY PLACE
Now listen again to what Jesus announced to that first-century generation:
“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
He was not promising them the physical planet someday.
He was announcing that the realm of priestly privilege — the covenantal earth pictured by the Holy Place — was about to become their inheritance.
That is the language the Hebrew writers used. Heaven, earth, and sea were the temple map. The Holy Place was the earth. The Levitical priests were the ones who inhabited it. Jesus was speaking inside that covenant culture — a priestly world that had been teaching this way for centuries — not inventing a new metaphor about dirt and continents.
The meek were about to receive what had been restricted to the priesthood.
And when did that happen?
WHEN JESUS DIED, THE VEIL WAS TORN.
Matthew 27:51 records that the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom.
That was not a special effect for Good Friday.
It was a declaration that the covenantal barrier restricting access was being removed.
The priestly realm was being opened.
THE MEEK HAD INHERITED THE EARTH.
Not ownership of a planet.
Fellowship.
Illumination.
Communion.
Acceptance.
Access.
3. THE APOSTLES SAID THEY ALREADY HAD IT
Watch how Paul talks about it.
Ephesians 1:3:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with ALL spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
ALL spiritual blessings.
Not someday.
Already.
Ephesians 2:6 says God had raised them up together and made them sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
They hadn’t been teleported into the sky.
Their covenantal position had changed.
Those who once stood outside the priestly realm had been raised into access, authority, and fellowship with God.
That is why Peter can say:
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation…” — 1 Peter 2:9
A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD.
Do you see the connection?
Under the old covenant, the Levitical priests inhabited the covenantal earth of the Holy Place.
Under the New Covenant, the people of Christ inherited those priestly privileges.
The meek inherited the earth because they had become a royal priesthood.
And that is why Hebrews 4:16 can say:
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace…”
COME BOLDLY.
Those words would have stunned people who had lived behind veils, sacrifices, and an appointed priesthood.
Christ had opened the way.
They were no longer standing outside.
They had inherited what the temple had been picturing.
4. TWO VEILS. TWO MOMENTS.
Here is the detail that keeps the timeline honest.
The temple had TWO veils.
The first separated the outer court from the Holy Place — the covenantal earth.
The second separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies — heaven.
The tearing of the veil at the cross marked the opening of the inheritance.
Yet the old covenant temple and its priesthood kept operating for another forty years.
That was the transitional generation — the old covenant passing away while the New Covenant was being established in fullness.
Hebrews 9:8 says the way into the holiest was not yet fully manifested while the first tabernacle still stood.
The inheritance had been opened through Christ.
The old order had not yet completely disappeared.
That remaining order came to its end when Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed.
The old covenant heaven and earth passed away.
The fullness of the New Covenant stood revealed.
The cross opened the inheritance.
The fall of the temple marked the end of the old covenant order.
In You’re Already Home, I walk that same temple map from garden to Sinai to the torn veil to the last stone — because this is not a side teaching. It is the architecture of the story.
5. WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
Now go back and read Jesus’ words with the temple understanding His original audience already had.
“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
He wasn’t telling them to wait thousands of years for possession of the planet.
He was announcing that the privileges of the covenantal earth — once reserved for the Levitical priesthood — were about to become the inheritance of His people.
The light of the Menorah.
The fellowship of the Showbread.
The acceptance pictured by the incense.
The privilege of drawing near to God.
And this is what makes the fulfillment so freeing.
We are not waiting to inherit the earth.
We are not waiting for a veil to be torn.
We are not waiting to become kings and priests.
We are not waiting to be raised into heavenly places.
That covenantal transition is over.
The old temple system is gone.
Its shadows have given way to the reality they were always pointing toward.
Access to God is no longer determined by ancestry, Levitical lineage, or temple boundaries.
The meek inherited the earth when Christ opened the priestly realm.
And what they inherited was far greater than ownership of a planet.
They inherited covenantal relationship with God.
The earth was the realm of priestly fellowship.
The meek were made a royal priesthood.
The inheritance was fulfilled in Christ.
So no — I’m not waiting for the meek to finally get the dirt.
I’m looking at what Jesus actually promised that generation.
Priestly access.
Present fellowship.
A people already raised into heavenly places.
You’re not waiting for the promise.
You’re living in its fulfillment.
Welcome home.
